My goal with each project is a visual language that carries the subtext without announcing itself, while capturing the essential beats and serving the director’s vision. I’m drawn to character-driven dramas with a psychological or sociological bent — diving into a character’s mindset and bringing an audience along whether they agree with it or not. Much of my work combines disparate styles so the contrast makes its own meaning: a gangster noir that turns absurdist comedy, or a social realism that becomes magical fantasy.
I’ve shot three features, including Terrestrial for Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine, Accepted), and dozens of shorts. Commercially, I shoot social campaigns and branded content for Microsoft and T-Mobile, with talent including Zoe Saldaña, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, Billy Bob Thornton, Druski and the Backstreet Boys, along with music videos and fashion and beauty work — editorial, lifestyle, hair and makeup — in studio and on location. I’m equally at home unscripted: the room-makeover series Redo My Room, behind the scenes, events and documentary-style coverage, where the frame has to be found rather than built.
I came up through lighting, having studied engineering and computer science before film, and I still gaff — features, documentaries, commercials, music videos and more than thirty vertical microdramas. I founded Key Side Films for camera and G&E rentals and crew. I’m fascinated by what new technology can do for storytelling: virtual production and LED volumes, previs and techvis, virtual lighting, environment scanning and motion capture, and the hybrid workflows that tie them back to a practical set. I’m also building KeyPlot, a 2.5D plotting and lighting-simulation tool for filmmakers — a way to bring all of those interests together in one place.
I grew up outside Boston, studied Film & Television at Boston University, then moved to Los Angeles for an MFA in Cinematography at the American Film Institute. On my off days I’m hiking, camping, skiing, in the garage building something, or unwinding with a single-player video game. I’m into architecture and interior design, photography, board games, good coffee and slow barbecue, and I will find the tiki bar in any city. New England Patriots, always.
